New Year, new look: Abu Dhabi introduces yellow plates for commercial motorcycles in 2025
Red licence plates remain for private two-wheelers
Abu Dhabi is set to unveil a new era in motorcycle transportation with the introduction of yellow licence plates for commercial motorcycles, effective from January 1, 2025.
The initiative, spearheaded by the Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) under Abu Dhabi Mobility, is aligned with the emirate’s vision for sustainable development and enhanced road safety.
The ITC’s decision targets approximately 26,186 commercial motorcycles currently operating under red plates. The new yellow plates will make it easier to distinguish commercially owned motorcycles from private ones, streamlining traffic regulation and improving compliance with safety standards.
Yellow licence plates
The transition to yellow plates will be mandatory in several scenarios: during ownership transfer, plate number changes, or if a plate is damaged or lost.
Additionally, all new commercial motorcycles registered after January 1, 2025, will receive the yellow plates as standard.
Mohammed Al Braik Al Ameri, Executive Director of the Drivers and Vehicles Licensing Sector, emphasised the dual benefits of this initiative. “The colour-coded plates will not only enhance road safety but also ensure smoother motorcycle traffic flow,” he stated. By clearly marking commercial vehicles, traffic efficiency and database management are expected to improve significantly.
This bold move also underscores Abu Dhabi’s commitment to fostering economic activities. The yellow colour was chosen specifically for its symbolic connection to commerce, distinguishing it from other transport categories. This change is expected to optimise the role of motorcycles in commercial operations, especially for delivery services.
To meet the demand, Abu Dhabi has mobilised 15 factories across the emirate to produce the new yellow plates. This ensures a seamless transition for businesses while supporting local manufacturing.
Private motorcycles keep red plates
Around 10,579 privately owned motorcycles in Abu Dhabi will retain their red licence plates, ensuring a clear distinction between private and commercial usage.
